Nigeria in pot 2 as AFCON 2023 draw holds in Abidjan Thursday
The final draw for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been billed for Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday, October 12.
The draw ceremony is expected to be broadcast live on CAF’s YouTube channel and on it global TV partners.
The historical event will be hosted at Parc des Expositions in Abidjan amidst glitz and glamour.
The final tournament will kick off on January 13, 2024 with the final game scheduled for February 11, 2024.
Apart from Ivory Coast, the hosts who automatically qualified after winning the bid to host the biennial Tournament, Other 23 nations had to book their places in the finals through the qualifiers.
The following teams made it to the finals; Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Congo DR, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia and Zambia.
Teams have been pooled according to their September Fifa ranking.
Pot 1 has Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt.
Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana and DR Congo are all fixed up in Pot 2.
Pot 3 has South Africa, Cape Verde, Guinea, Zambia, Equatorial Guinea, Mauritania while Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, Gambia, Tanzania are housed in Pot 4.
The 24 teams will be drawn into six groups of four and the draw will start at 19.00 West African Time, 22.00 East Africa Time, and 21:00 South Africa Time.
