Nigeria beat Ghana in WAFU B U-17 Championship opener

The Nigeria National U-17 team also known as Golden Eaglets on Saturday defeated their Ghanian counterparts 4-2 in the opening match of the WAFU-B U-17 championship.

A convincing performance from the Coach Nduka Ugbade’s side, the Eaglets took all the fans and spectators alike on the stand through an awe deal of football artistry as they thumped the host in a six goal thriller encounter.

Emmanuel Michael’s spectacular free kick in the 12th minutes of the game had pushed the Nigerian team to an early lead before Precious Williams doubled the edge in the 44th minutes after slotting home a poorly-caught-ball by the Ghanian’s Goalkeeper.

The team went into the break with their head high and it was another Goalkeeper’s error in the minutes that handed Jibril Azeez the Third goal of the game.

The hosts got on the scoresheet in the 58th minutes when Abdulrazaq Salifu received a cross and outsmarted two defenders to slot home Ghana’s first goal, reducing the tally for his side.

While the hosts are trying to set their path on a recovery level, Light Eke found his name on the scoreline when he turned in a corner to make it four for Nigeria 12 to the end of the game.

The last quarter of the game saw the Black Starlets busting on from different angles with thier apparent dominance eventually earning them a penalty which
Collins Agyemang smashed home to record their second goal from the last rush.

With the victory, the Eaglets top Group A of the championship ahead of their clash with Togo on Tuesday. A triumph over the Togolese side will guarantee Nigeria a spot in the tournament semi finals.
 
Group B is made up of Cote d’Ivoire, Benin Republic, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic.

The two teams that make it to the final of the WAFU B tournament will qualify for the 2023 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria.

And the top four teams at the U-17 AFCON tournament will qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru as the CAF representatives.
