NEC introduces renewed hope plan to propel $1trn economy goal by 2030

The National Economic Council (NEC) has introduced the Renewed Hope Development Plan (2026–2030), a strategic framework designed to bolster Nigeria’s reform initiatives and reach the ambitious target of a $1 trillion economy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

This announcement came during the NEC’s 151st meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, explained that this plan is part of a comprehensive 30-year development strategy focused on inclusivity and accelerated economic growth.

Vice President Shettima emphasized the plan’s significance, stating, “This is no ordinary transition. It is the bridge between lessons learnt and ambitions pursued.”

He noted that the Renewed Hope Plan aims to consolidate ongoing reforms while ensuring policy continuity that aligns with Nigeria Agenda 2050.

Highlighting the plan’s collaborative approach, Shettima said, “This plan will not be drawn from the ivory towers of Abuja alone.

It will be participatory,” underscoring the importance of engaging various stakeholders, including government tiers, civil society, and the private sector.

In addition to the development plan, the Vice President announced measures to increase local production of solar-powered irrigation pumps to help farmers cut energy costs and enhance dry-season farming.

“This is an intervention to lower farmers’ energy costs, expand dry-season farming, and reinforce food security,” he remarked.

Furthermore, Shettima urged council members to focus on turning policies into tangible outcomes for the population.

“Let this 151st meeting echo as a continuation of our covenant. Let it move from chamber to community, from rhetoric to result,” he insisted.

The NEC also called on the Accountant General of the Federation to expedite funding for the upcoming national immunization campaign and urged partners to harness technology to improve surveillance and tracking in Nigeria’s immunization program.
