Naira Notes: Hackers posted fake CBN statement on my social media pages — Aisha Buhari

Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has dissociated herself from a fake Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statement posted on her verified social media accounts, today, Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

The wife of the president said a hacker had his way into her social media accounts, in order to circulate the fake report.

As earlier reported by The Informant247, the CBN portrayed Aisha Buhari, the wife of the President Muhammadu Buhari as a liar for posting a report that the apex bank has extended the acceptance of old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes for the next 70 days.

The Informant247 gathered that the first lady publicised a statement purportedly originating from the apex bank on her social media handles, announcing the extension of the acceptance of the old naira notes by 70 days.

The statement which was shared by the first lady reads: “Due to the current and unpleasant situation happening in Nigeria, in line with Mr. president, after having a closed meeting with him on the 20th of February, 2023, Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) has been directed to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 70 days up to May 1, 2023. Members of the public should therefore continue to spend the old notes. Media practitioners are advised to PLEASE spread out this helpful information to the public.”

The Director, Corporates Communications Department, of the apex bank purportedly signed the statement.

Reacting few minutes later, the mother of all Nigerian banks falsified the report shared by the first lady, describing it as fake news.

The apex bank placed the 2 statements side by side and warned the people to beware of fake reports.

The bank stated that: “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to some fake and unauthorized messages quoting the CBN as having authorized the Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N200 and N1,000 Banknotes. For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with Mr. President’s broadcast of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been directed to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 60 days up to April 10, 2023. Members of the public should therefore disregard any message and/or information not formally released by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject.

“Media practitioners are advised to PLEASE verify any information from the correct sources before publication.”

The wife of the president also took to social media to narrate how the report got to her social media pages.

According to Mrs Buhari: “It has come to my attention that a certain fake news was posted on my social media handle, Instagram which also directly connects to my Facebook page, earlier this morning. I have since directed that it should be deleted.

“This is without a doubt the criminal actions of the person(s) who were responsible for deleting quite a number of my posts since 2018 to late last year when I posted a video and picture of my hands with Henna design of ABAT insignia on the day I launched the APC Women Presidential Campaign Committee for Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Ilorin, Kwara State, my post on the event for the Traditional and Complementary Alternative Medicine (TCAM) conference and 17 other posts.

“This person is a hacker, criminally minded with the intention to continue attacking my reputation through my social media platforms. “But I am assuring you that this is the first and last I am disclaiming fake news on my handle. It is the responsibility of the security agencies to find out who am I sharing my social media handles with, despite being verified accounts, and take all necessary actions.”

While reacting to the disclaimer issued by the first lady, one Sadeeq Abubakar wrote: “Thanks for the clearance!!!! We’re behind new notes redesign!!”

Success Itumo wrote: “I assure you ma that your social media handlers are not doing their job well. Otherwise, they would have fished out the hackers and bring them to book. Honestly, I assure you.”

Olorunsola Temi wrote: “The funniest thing is that I reposted it since it comes from our number 1 mummy of Nigeria.”

Shafiu Tangaza wrote: “This has led to a lot of confusion.”
