NAFDAC busts large-scale operation of fake chemicals, expired food flavors in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a significant illegal operation involving the sale of counterfeit chemicals, expired food flavors, unauthorized fertilizers, and repackaged pharmaceutical raw materials in the Alapere area of Ketu, Lagos.

According to a statement from the agency, the operation resulted in the arrest of several suspects and the sealing of three warehouses filled with harmful substances.

Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, remarked, “This raid was initiated based on credible intelligence regarding a criminal network engaged in large-scale food and chemical counterfeiting.”

He highlighted that the agency’s actions are crucial in safeguarding the health of Nigerians, stressing that some individuals are masquerading as legitimate business operators while engaging in activities that put public health at significant risk.

Iluyomade elaborated on the offences, stating that the perpetrators were involved in the sale and repackaging of expired chemicals, with some products dangerously diverted for use in food and drug production.

He noted, “We discovered several controlled substances and high-risk materials, including fertilizers that require special clearance from the National Security Adviser, being stockpiled without any authorization.”
