A woman, Mrs Maria Adoga on Tuesday told the a Makurdi court to put an end to her marriage on the ground that her husband of nine years, Moses was an alcoholic person who abuses her.
The housewife, in a petition seeking divorce revealed she entered the union with Moses in 2013 under the Idoma Tradition Laws.
She narrated that she later had a church wedding which took place at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Ugbokolo in Okpokwu LGA.
She lamented that the marriage was no more going smoothly as expected as it has broken down irretrievably.
She added that God has blessed the marriage with three children with the ages of 7, 5 and 8 months.
“During our courtship and early part of the marriage, the respondent was so loving until when he started being hostile towards me.
“The respondent beats me mercilessly without any provocation. I have reported multiple injuries and I can’t bear it anymore.
“He drinks all sort of alcohol and misbehaves in our matrimonial home in the presence of the children and neighbours.” she said
The petitioner also revealed that the respondent has cultivated the habit of abandoning their home for weeks once he got his monthly salary.
She further narrated that the respondent has not been paying rent and has left his responsibilities undone as the head of the family.
“The respondent in 2020 showed some symptoms of mental disorder.
”My children and I are no longer safe living in the same apartment with the respondent.” she insisted
She persuaded the court to direct for a decree of legal separation.
She also persuaded the court to allow the three children to be in her custody.
The petitioner has demanded the sum of N300, 000 every year for the upkeep of the children which would be for their school fees and well-being and monthly sustenance allowance of N50, 000.
When reacting to the matter, Moses pleaded with the court.
”We are in the process of settling the matter out of court, he said.
Mr Vershima Hwande, the Magistrate, has adjourned the matter until January 23 for the report of the out of court settlement.
