An unidentified man was tragically electrocuted at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State.

The incident occurred on Monday night near the Faculty of Education building, close to the Department of Economics within the university.

Reports indicate that the victim had been attempting to cut a high-tension cable when the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) unexpectedly restored electricity, resulting in his immediate electrocution.

His lifeless body was discovered hanging from an electric pole at a transformer station near the new Faculty of Education building.

Emergency responders, including EEDC officials, the police, and university safety personnel, were on the scene, and the body was retrieved around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

This incident follows a similar case in which another man was found killed at a transformer in Amawbia, a neighboring community to Awka, just a week prior.

The Public Relations Officer of UNIZIK, Mrs. Chika Ene, referred inquiries to the university’s chief security officer, while the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the university had reported the incident to the police.

The Head of Corporate Communication at EEDC, Mr. Emeka Eze, also confirmed the incident, describing it as a case of vandalism.

The Nigeria Police Force from B-Division was responsible for removing the victim’s body from the scene.
