A man, Audu Agene, on Tuesday appeared in court over alleged stealing of a cockerel which belonged to his neighbour.
Agene was arraigned before a Makurdi Upper Area Court over alleged stealing of a cockerel which belonged to his neighbour.
Agene, who’s residing in Agbongh village in Makurdi was charged by the police with mischief and criminal trespass.
Insp Veronica Shaagee, who’s the Prosecution Counsel, informed the court that Mr Saawuan Ngugban of same address brought the matter to the stiffness’awareness of the law enforcement agency at ‘D’ Division Police Station Makurdi on November 12.
Shaagee added that Agene invaded the Ngugban’s plot, and dispossessed the owner of his cockerel worth N6, 500 .
She further said police investigation into the case was still proceeding and demanded for additional time to assist the ongoing investigation.
She also said the offence was in contravention of the provisions of sections 348 and 327 of the Penal Code Law of Benue.
When the matter was read to him, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Mr Vershima Hwande, who’s the Magistrate, granted the accused N100, 000 bail in the sum plus one surety in the like sum.
Hwande also declared that the surety should be a government worker and therefore adjourned the matter until January 10 for further mention.
