KWEPA seals off houses over lack of toilets
Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), in its efforts to enforce environmental health Laws and to prevent the widespread of infectious disease in the state, has on Wednesday, sealed off five houses on Talubi Street, Eruda area in Ilorin, over non-compliance with environmental regulations.
Hajia Idayat Folorunsho Adeola, the Acting General Manager of the agency, while leading the enforcement team, explained that the action was necessitated by the occupants’ persistent disregard for environmental health laws.
According to her, “Every house must have toilet facilities to prevent open defecation, which poses serious health risks to the general public,” she emphasised.
Hajia Folorunsho said that the offenders had previously received an abatement notice and signed a letter of undertaking to address the nuisance but failed to comply, adding that a disregard for the law led to the agency’s action.
The KWEPA boss, while further warning that the agency would continue to enforce laws to protect public health and safety, appealed to residents to cooperate with environmental health officers in carrying out their duties and ensure every house has functional toilet facilities.
The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency is empowered by law to sanction or take legal action against individuals, organisations, or premises that disobey environmental health laws.
