Kwara North: Ex-Patigi chairman Lata dumps APC over insecurity, internal crisis

The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suffered another major setback following the resignation of former Patigi Local Government Chairman, Dauda Lata, from the ruling party.

Lata, a former member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the APC chairman of Lade Ward III, citing worsening insecurity in his constituency, developments within the party and concerns over the political situation in the state.

The former council chairman said his decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders, associates, supporters and other stakeholders across Patigi, Kwara North and Kwara State.

According to him, the resignation, which takes immediate effect, was reached after a careful assessment of the prevailing political circumstances and the aspirations and expectations of the people he had served.

Lata’s exit comes amid growing uncertainty within the Kwara APC, with several prominent stakeholders and members leaving the party in recent days.

His resignation comes just days after Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central, announced his departure from the APC following a prolonged internal crisis. Since then, a number of party stakeholders, ward executives and members across the state have also announced their exits.

Several of those who have resigned have pointed to internal disagreements, perceived exclusion, unfair treatment and concerns about the direction of the party.

Lata’s departure could be particularly significant in Kwara North, where he has built political influence through his previous roles as local government chairman and state lawmaker.

His resignation also comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in parts of Kwara North, where communities and stakeholders have continued to raise alarm over attacks, kidnappings and other security challenges.

The former lawmaker stressed that his decision was not taken hastily, describing it as the outcome of “careful reflection, broad consultations and a thorough assessment” of the political situation and the expectations of his constituents.

He thanked the APC for the opportunities and relationships he enjoyed during his time in the party, while appreciating its leaders, members and associates who worked with him over the years.

Lata also acknowledged community leaders, youths, women and supporters who had remained committed to his political journey, urging them to remain peaceful and united as consultations over his next political move continue.
