Kwara govt revokes billboard licenses to enhance urban aesthetics

In a bold initiative to overhaul the visual landscape of the state, the Kwara State Government has revoked all issued signage and billboard licenses for the year 2024. This decision comes in the wake of an earlier announcement regarding the suspension of such licenses, and it underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining order and aesthetics in outdoor advertising.

The announcement was made by Hon. Bolanle Olukoju, the Commissioner for Communications and Chairman of the Kwara State Taskforce Committee on Illegal Billboards and Signages. The decision aims to facilitate the removal of unauthorized and poorly positioned billboards, posters, and light pole banners, particularly in Ilorin and other urban centers. This move aligns with the Urban Renewal Programme under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, which seeks to transform Kwara into a more modern and visually appealing state.

The government has immediately halted all new registrations and renewals of signage and billboard licenses until further notice. This strategic pause allows the state to finalize a robust regulatory framework for outdoor advertising.

The government has urged owners of non-compliant billboards to act swiftly and remove unauthorized structures, as identification efforts are already underway. Enforcement of this initiative will commence next week, reflecting the administration’s resolve to eliminate illegal advertising practices and enhance the overall ambiance of the state.

As the enforcement period approaches, advertising sector stakeholders and the general public are encouraged to comply with these regulations to foster a cleaner, more organized urban environment. The Kwara State Government’s efforts are expected to pave the way for a revitalized public space that resonates with residents and visitors alike.
