Kwara-born Oye Owolewa wins seat in U.S. Congress

Kwara-born Democrat, Oye Omolewa, will be elected as a shadow United States Representative out of the District of Columbia, U.S. media reports.

The 30-year-old, whose agenda includes fighting income inequality in the U.S., will be the first Nigerian congressman in the country’s history.

He was projected by ABC 7 News to have 82.65% of the votes, which represents 135,234 votes against Joyce Robinson-Paul, who had 15,541 votes, and Sohaer Syed with 12,846 votes.

“Democrat Oye Owolewa will be elected as a shadow U.S. Representative out of the District of Columbia,” ABC 7 News tweeted.

Oye Owolewa, whose father is from Kwara and mother from Oyo, is a Ph.D holder in Pharmacy from Northeastern University, Boston.
