The Kwara State House of Assembly has urged the Chief Executive Officer of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) to consider the deployment of personnel of the authority for evening duties especially in places within the Ilorin metropolis and other major cities in the state.
The resolution was hinged on a motion on “The Need for Road Users to Comply with Traffic Regulations for Optimum Performance of KWARTMA Officials on Duty: KWHAM 5” which was moved by Hon. Jimoh Ali Yusuf (Ilorin East).
In leading his debate, Jimoh expressed concerns that in spite of the onerous task of road traffic management and control, motorists and other road users in the State do not accord the personnel of the Traffic Management Authority the required cooperation that will assist in the performance of their duties, stressing that they are not conscious of provision of the law establishing the authority that gives room for the personnel to operate in the night and as well impose fines on any arrested errant road user to serve as correctional and deterrence measures.
Reacting, the Assembly commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for approving the redeployment of staff of the defunct Kwara Express to the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority to strengthen the personnel situation of the Authority for optimum performance.
The lawmakers further urged the state government to engage in more sensitisation of the public through the media especially radio on the functions and powers of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority with the regard to control of road traffic and connected purposes.
