Issa Salami, Abdulraheem Oladimeji, Kamaldeen Ajibade others bag Awards

~All is not well with us, there is decline in the ethics of the legal profession – Kwara state Chief Judge.

The Founder, Al-hikmah University, Alhaji Cheif Dr. Abdulraheem Oladimeji, Hon. Justice Ayo Salami, Hon. Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN and others has today bag awards at the 2017 Bar Dinner and Award night held at the Kwara State banquet hall, Ilorin.

The award, according to the Chairman of the Dinner and award Committe, Barr. Abiodun E. Dada, was described as being conferred on the worthy members of the public by the association as a way appreciating and reciprocating their various contributions not only to the bar, but also to the development of the society.

While giving his welcome address, he said, “These eminent Nigerians, among others have brought out the best among people, fostered creativity and innovation and delivered superior performance which has resulted in a better society and turning hopeless impossibilities into enviable possibility”

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Judge of Kwara State, Hon. Justice S. D. Kawu, expressed sadness over the decline in the ethics of the legal profession.

According to him, “All is not well with us, there is decline in the ethics of the legal profession. Members of the bench, stop writing petition against yourself”

A number of other prominent Nigerians who received award during the occasion includes; Prof. Rasheed Jimoh Ijaodola, Engr. Morgan Frank Allan, Alhaji Dr. Kamarudeen Ibitoye Yusuf, FCSN, and Alhaji Billy Adedamola.

The chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Ilorin Branch, Barr. Issa Manzuma while delivering his speech during the occasion expressed concern over the security threat posed by the over-crowded Nigeria prisons, he further appeals to the federal government to call on security agencies to tame the violation of fundamental right of Nigerians during the course of their operations.

“Section 36(4) of the 1999 Constitution provides that every persons arraigned for a criminal offence shall be entitled to fair hearing within a reasonable time. While those standing trail for corruption related offences could afford to retain the services of the best brains in the legal profession to defend them. Our prisons are overcrowded or congested with ordinary Nigerians, accused of minor offences- some even misdemeanour.”

“It is my humble view, that unless this ugly situation is arrested urgently, the country faces a serious security threats, as the prisons have become a training grounds for criminals.”

“I also appeal to the Federal Government to tame the country’s security agencies. The needless clashed among security agencies and, the flagrant violation of fundamental rights of hapless Nigerians in the course of operations, expose the country to International ridicule; and it should also challenges our ability to build a Nation”
