Internet fraudster bags 4 months jail term for impersonation

Friday Owoicho, 23, was sentenced to four months in jail on Tuesday for impersonating.

Owoicho asked the court for mercy after pleading guilty to the accusation brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Owoicho was punished without the option of a fine by Justice Kezziah Ogbonnaya, who also advised him to stop committing crimes and to be of positive behaviour.

Earlier, prosecution attorney Chiamaka Njoku informed the court that the defence counsel, Timothy Istifanus, had signed a plea bargain agreement and its provisions had been approved.

Njoku stated that the conditions of the plea bargain required the defendant to sign an affidavit of good behaviour and accept a sentence of nine months in jail or a fine of N200,000.

She also told the court that Owoicho fraudulently impersonated an American citizen, Jesse Phillips through a hangout account with an email address, jesserphilips693@gmail.com sometime in 2021.

The prosecution counsel said Owoicho committed the crime with intent to obtain the sum of 150 euros, adding that the offence contravened section (22) (2) (b)ii of the Cyber Crimes Act 2015.
