The indigenes of Offa, both locally and abroad, are steadfast in their commitment to elevate the annual Ijakadi festival of their ancient town. Speaking during the 2023 Ijakadi festival programs in Ilorin on Thursday, members of the media sub-committee and the Offa Council of Honorary Chiefs underscored the festival’s potential to enhance Offa’s socio-economic development.
Aare Abdulwaheed Olagunju, Chairman of the Media Sub-Committee, emphasized the economic opportunities the festival presents. He urged the federal government to allocate resources, both financial and otherwise, to maximize the event’s contribution to the local GDP.
“We believe our people would benefit significantly from the festival, fostering culture, tourism, and economic activities. The festival’s impact on our GDP would be substantial. Everything involved, from chairs and stages to artisans and food vendors, will be sourced locally, boosting Offa’s economy. Thriving businesses will contribute as taxpayers, benefiting the government in return,” he explained.
The community appealed to the government to recognize Ijakadi Offa as a national festival, citing its consistency and rich cultural content. Organizers emphasized the festival’s evolution, aiming not only to showcase Offa’s cultural heritage but also to attract innovation and international participation.
“The Ijakadi Festival has become a cultural attraction, drawing enthusiasts from the diaspora and domestic patrons, transforming Offa into a vibrant hub annually. We urge the Honourable Minister to support the Ijakadi festival, enhancing tourism in Kwara State and attracting investments for economic growth,” said a spokesperson.
In addition to preserving cultural heritage, the community hopes to promote competitive wrestling alongside traditional bouts, encouraging healthy competition, courage, perseverance, and good health among the people of Offa. The organizers expressed their determination to ensure the Ijakadi Offa festival remains a vital part of Nigeria’s cultural landscape, akin to renowned festivals across the country.
As Offa continues to celebrate its heritage through the Ijakadi festival, the community remains focused on sustaining this valuable tradition, promoting economic growth, and preserving their cultural legacy for generations to come.
