Humanitarian aid blocked as Israel intensifies attacks on Gaza
Hamas threatens hostage executions in response to Israeli attacks
As Israel intensifies its attacks and enforces a complete blockade on Gaza, authorities warn of a looming humanitarian crisis in the territory. Israel’s response to Hamas attacks has led to a severe disruption of essential supplies.
The Israeli government declared a “complete siege” on Gaza, including cutting off electricity, food, fuel, and water supplies. Reports from residents indicate that aid has not reached the enclave since Saturday. BBC footage reveals the devastation with deserted streets covered in rubble from collapsed buildings due to Israeli airstrikes.
The reprisal attacks have resulted in more than 500 casualties, with Gaza’s population of approximately 2.3 million people, where 80% rely on humanitarian aid, particularly due to ongoing hostilities with Israel.
Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, stated the imposition of the “complete siege” on the territory, leaving it without essential resources. He remarked, “No electricity, no food, no water, no gas – it’s all closed,” and emphasized that they are dealing with a challenging situation.
Furthermore, the Israeli Infrastructure Minister ordered the immediate cutoff of water supplies to Gaza, stating that “What was in the past will no longer be in the future.”
Hamas Issues Threats of Hostage Executions
The spokesperson of al Qassam Brigade, Hamas’ armed wing, issued a warning that civilian hostages would be executed, with the killings broadcasted, if Israel targets people in Gaza without prior warning. Abu Obaida stated, “We declare that we will respond to any targeting of our people who are safe in their homes without warning, with the execution of our civilian hostages, and we will broadcast it with audio and video.”
Hamas claims to hold more than 100 hostages, including Israeli army officers.
US Army Seeks More Aid for Israel
Secretary of the US Army, Christine Wormuth, indicated that additional funding from Congress would be necessary for the Defense Department to provide munitions to Israel while the US continues to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Wormuth stressed the need for increased capacity, expanded production, and financing munitions.
The Biden administration awaits clarity on Congress’s support for Israel in the absence of a sitting Speaker of the House.
Nigerian Shi’ites Express Support for Palestinians
The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as ‘Shiites,’ has expressed its support for the Palestinians amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Sheikh Sidi Sokoto, a member of the movement, emphasized the interconnectedness of global destinies and called on Nigerians to raise their voices in support of oppressed Palestinians.
EU Commission Suspends Palestinian Funding
The European Commission, the largest donor for the Palestinians, has suspended all Palestinian funding and is reviewing its development portfolio worth approximately 691 million euros ($728 million). This decision comes as the EU seeks to address the foundations for peace, tolerance, and coexistence in the region, emphasizing the need for immediate action against incitement to hatred, violence, and terror glorification.
