Hon. Shina Peller, a member of the House of Representatives representing Isheyin/ Kajola/ Iwajowa federal constituency in Oyo State has organised a training program for Kwara youths on areas of effective leadership skills, strategic communication, political mobilization, active citizenship and nation-building.

The Lawmaker, through his organization, Lead Generation Initiative, GLI, hosted the training on Wednesday in Ilorin, the state capital. Present at the event were a large section of Kwara youths, youth influencers, change advocates and stakeholders in government.

While speaking at the program tagged Get Involved Leadership Training (GILT), Peller said his organization is aimed at grooming young, active and well-informed citizens who are committed to the development of Nigeria.

“Our mission here is simply to train interdependent leaders who can in turn train others that can drive development from the grassroots. We believe in the bottom-up kind of leadership approach, because from our findings if the majority of our communities are led by well-informed citizens, our challenges as a nation will be less,” he said.

He stressed that his organization is keen on raising awareness about community development and the need for young persons to become active political players involved in nation-building.

Peller added, “We have seen the widening orientation gap amongst the citizenry, especially the young generation. And we believe that for Nigeria to be transformed, we need to re-orientate a new crop of leaders to get it right and to get involved in building the nation.

“Today, people with means are thinking of running away from Nigeria because they have given up on the country. There are even rumors of disintegration, unpatriotic person hitting up the polity for selfish reasons. If we all run away, who will fix Nigeria?

“Of a truth, we are faced with many challenges as a country, but like I always say ‘You cannot solve the problem of headache by cutting off the head’. That would be a double tragedy!”

Hon. Peller who revealed that Kwara State was dear to his heart because his wife is an indigene, hoped that the training would have ripple effects on the participants across the State.

The lawmaker, therefore, encouraged the participating young people to get their voters’ cards and join political parties of their choice ahead of the 2023 elections in order to be able to have a say in the decision-making process.
