Group condemns Igbomina national body’s directive to aspirants over purchase of nomination forms
The Kwara South Peoples Assembly has condemned the Omo Ibile Igbomina body’s directive to all political aspirants of Igbomina origin to refrain from obtaining nomination forms until 29th April, 2026.
In a statement signed by Otunba Babatunde Akinyemi, Chairman, Kwara South Peoples Assembly, the body described the directive as ‘insensitive, wrong, and a clear departure from the mandate of a socio-cultural organisation.
The body maintained that “Omo Ibile Igbomina was not founded to regulate the political aspirations of Igbomina sons and daughters, adding that it has no “business dictating when and how aspirants engage their political parties.”
As part of its positions, it stated that the meddling into political space is out of bounds for socio-cultural body whose ‘core remit is the promotion of Igbomina culture, unity, and development”
The body noted that such directive is also capable of inadvertently heating up the polity and “creates suspicion, factions, and bad blood among aspirants who should be free to pursue legitimate ambitions under the law.”
While it also questioned the leadership of the Igbomina body of its motive ,the body said the directive signals suspicion of “a smokescreen to favour a particular aspirant”
“We note that the Chief Bisi Fakayode-led Executive Committee is not neutral. Chief Fakayode is a chieftain of the PDP who only recently resigned as the party’s Kwara South Senatorial Chairman. Hiding under culture to play partisan scripts is unacceptable” the statement said.
The body however “call on the Board of Trustees and the Council of Igbomina Elders to call the Chief Bisi Fakayode-led Executive Committee to order before further damage is done to the image and legacy of Egbe Omo Igbomina.”
Politics, according to the body “should be left to political parties and INEC while bodies like omo ibile igbomina should stick to their core mandate of promoting unity, development, and advocacy for its people.
“If the current leadership of Omo Ibile Igbomina lacks ideas on programmes to advance Igbomina culture, education, and economic empowerment, it should seek help. It should not mess up and disgrace a highly respected association that has existed for decades and earned the trust of our people” the body advised
