FRSC probes Kano fatal crash claiming lives of 22 athletes
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has initiated an investigation into a tragic road crash that resulted in the deaths of 22 athletes from Kano State. The Zonal Commanding Officer overseeing Jigawa, Kaduna, and Katsina States, Assistant Corps Marshal Ahmed Umar, revealed the news during a condolence visit to the Kano State Government House on Monday.
According to PUNCH Online, the accident occurred just a few kilometers from Kano while the athletes were returning home from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State. During his visit, Umar expressed that the incident represents “a devastating and tragic loss not just to Kano State, but to the entire country.” He emphasized that these athletes had excelled in the competition before their untimely demise.
“We have launched an in-depth investigation into the cause of this heart-wrenching crash,” he stated, noting the athletes were engaged in national service to promote unity through sports when the tragedy struck. Umar highlighted that the accident took place at a location known for its dangerous conditions and urged both state and federal officials to address such hazardous areas promptly.
“It is compulsory for the authorities, at whatever cost, to take decisive actions to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents. We cannot afford to keep losing lives this way,” he asserted. He also encouraged FRSC officials in Kano to take a proactive stance and provide regular updates to the state government regarding dangerous roads, poor infrastructure, and other traffic safety concerns.
In response, Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo thanked the FRSC for their solidarity during what he described as one of the darkest moments in recent history. He appreciated their visit and support following the incident that claimed the lives of 22 of their citizens, expressing deep sorrow for the loss, especially as the athletes were returning from representing the state.
“This is a wake-up call for all stakeholders. We must work together to protect the lives of our citizens,” Gwarzo stated, reiterating the commitment of the Kano State Government to partner with the FRSC in implementing road safety measures aimed at preventing future tragedies. He assured that the government would continue to support the families of the victims while taking necessary steps to avoid similar incidents in the future.
The crash has sparked widespread sympathy and concern, once again highlighting the urgent need for improved conditions on Nigerian highways, particularly in areas notorious for frequent fatal accidents.
