In a tragic incident at the Enweh West manifold in the Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, unknown gunmen ambushed a routine military escort duty for an oil company, resulting in the unfortunate demise of four soldiers from the 5 Battalion of the Nigerian Army.
Major Danjuma Jonah, the Deputy Director of 6 Division and Army Public Relations officer, reported the attack, revealing that suspected militants targeted the soldiers at Emesu junction along the Amungboro-Emuphan road.
The assailants, whose identities remain unknown, claimed the lives of four soldiers in action, while two oil workers are currently missing.
According to Major Jonah, the alleged perpetrators managed to escape through the Emesu waterside, utilizing the Orashi River as their means of evasion. Presently, military forces are engaged in a thorough search of the area to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act. Concurrently, efforts are being intensified to locate the whereabouts of the missing oil workers.
Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division and Nigerian Army/Land Component Commander of Joint Task Force, South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, expressed deep sorrow for the supreme sacrifice made by the gallant soldiers and vehemently condemned the unjustifiable attack.
Major Jonah affirmed that the military is actively pursuing the suspected criminals to ensure they face the consequences of their actions.
He urged members of the public to provide credible and actionable intelligence that could aid in the swift apprehension of the perpetrators, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in maintaining security and justice in the region.
