Fire guts four-room flats in Gaa Akanbi

A late-night fire has destroyed a building containing about four-bedroom flats in the Gaa Akanbi area of Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident occurred at No. 2 Laduba Street, Olohunsogo, Gaa Akanbi, in the early hours of Sunday.

The Kwara State Fire Service said it received a distress call and arrived at the scene at about 1:57 am, by which time the building was already fully engulfed in flames.

According to the service, the late notification allowed the fire to spread extensively before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters subsequently brought the blaze under control and prevented it from spreading to adjoining properties.

A preliminary assessment suggested that a power surge may have caused the fire, although the service said further investigation may be required to establish the exact cause.

The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, urged residents to pay attention to electrical safety and ensure that electrical installations and appliances are properly maintained.

He also advised residents to contact the fire service promptly whenever they notice a fire, stressing that early intervention could help minimise damage and protect lives and property.
