Farmer remanded in prison for allegedly damaging police post

A farmer, Jiir Godwin, residing at Tombo village in Logo Local Government Area of Benue was on Tuesday remanded for allegedly damaging a police post.

He was remanded on the directive of a Makurdi Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Godwin was charged by the police with abduction, malicious damage, kidnapping, hostage taking and for being a member of a secret cult.

Miss Sonia Yaikyur, who’s the Magistrate, rejected the plea of Godwin for want in jurisdiction.

She directed that the remand of the suspect in the Makurdi Correctional facility while investigation still proceeds.

Yaikyur has adjourned the matter until January 19.

Sgt. Regina Ishaya, who’s the Prosecution Counsel, informed the court that the matter was brought to the awareness of the law enforcement agency by Insp Sylvanus Chudu of the Nigeria Police.

Ishaya narrated that the defendant and other suspects armed themselves with harmful weapon, such as rifles and launched an attack at the Abeda Police Post, shooting uncontrollably in the air and singing war songs.

She also narrated that the suspects also invaded the office of the station officer, with the intent to kill him.

She also said that during the investigation of the police, the suspect admitted to carrying out the crime.

She said that the suspect also enumerated two other persons as his associates.

The prosecution counsel revealed that the investigations into the case still continue and persuaded the court for an adjournment.

Ishaya also said the offence was in contravention of the provisions of sections 97, 349, 354 of the Penal Code Law of Benue 2004 and 4(2) of the Abduction, Hostage taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Law of Benue, 2017.
