World Teachers’ Day, also known as International Day for Teachers, is an annual event observed every October 5 to celebrate and appraise teachers on the planet.

More than a hundred states commemorate World Teachers’ Day and each holds its date for celebration. Despite the variations, the date of October 5 holds a special spot in the calendar.

It has the assent of the United Nations and – is upheld and observed across several countries – including Nigeria.

World Teachers’ Day is co-convened in collaboration with specialized bodies of the UN such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), and Education International (EI).

Theme

The theme for 2022, set aside by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), reads: “The transformation of education begins with teachers”.

It was adopted with respect to the relentless effort of teachers to see to the seamless delivery of quality education to learners, at the time when the coronavirus pandemic was rife.

The pandemic and its public and socio-economic impacts, also impeded conventional learning. Teachers had to improvise and consequently: resolved to other modes of education.

Background

Created in October 1994 the annual event commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation.

The recommendation which was adopted on October 5 at an intergovernmental conference in Paris, the French Capitol, aimed to elaborate the status of teachers in all spheres.

Established by UNESCO and celebrated since 1994, the annual celebration offers an opportunity to promote the teaching profession.

It inter alia aims to highlight current issues affecting teachers and address major priorities as regards education.

2022 Celebrations: What to expect

Series of events will take place at UNESCO Headquarters, which commences today and runs till October 7. Teachers are an icon and dependable source of knowledge.

Estimably, they are one of the most influential forces for human development, and their contributions to society cannot be overemphasized.

Thus in their honour, a host of activities will be organised by both national and international bodies, and several countries around the world.
