Emir of Ilorin hails SDP’s Adewole Adebayo for staying connected beyond elections
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has commended Prince Adewole Adebayo Esq, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, for maintaining close ties with the people beyond election periods.
The Emir gave this praise when Prince Adebayo, alongside former Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalong; SDP’s 2023 senatorial candidate, Dr Ridwan Apaokagi; and the State Chairman of SDP, Dr Afeez Afolabi, among other dignitaries, paid a visit to his palace.
He noted that politicians should engage with the public consistently, not just when they need votes.
He also emphasised the importance of individuals from royal backgrounds participating in politics, as their involvement could strengthen the role of traditional institutions in promoting social stability.
Referring to Prince Adebayo’s visit during Ramadan to share iftar with the people, the Emir described it as a thoughtful gesture that reflects a genuine commitment to understanding and connecting with the community.
He further urged politicians to promote unity and avoid making unrealistic promises.
In his response, Prince Adebayo expressed deep respect for the Emir’s contributions to Nigeria’s legal system, acknowledging the role he played in advancing justice.
He stated that the SDP shares similar values, as justice is central to the party’s principles.
He added that his visit was also a mark of respect for the Emir, both as a royal leader and as a prominent figure in Kwara State.
According to him, Nigeria does not necessarily need more wealth but rather justice, which can bring lasting peace.
Prince Adebayo also described Ilorin as a centre of knowledge and peace, highlighting its influence beyond Nigeria, including in the Middle East, where he once worked.
