Court sentences mechanic to 24 months imprisonment for stealing client’s car

A mechanic, Tipi Tanko, 21, was on Friday sentenced to 24 months imprisonment over theft of golf car belonging to a client.

He was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment by an Area Court in Jos on Friday for stealing a car given to him by the client to repair.

Daniel Damulak, who presided over the matter made the pronouncement after Tanko pleaded guilty to the crime of theft and breach of trust and persuaded the court for mercy.

The judge has given the convict an option to pay N100,000 fine or risk 24 months imprisonment and order them to make a payment of N30,000 as a compensation to the complainant.

Insp Ibrahim Gowkat, who’s the Prosecution Counsel, earlier informed the court that the matter was on on June 6, brought to the awareness of the law enforcement agency at the Anglo Jos Police station on June 6, by Mr Moses Choji.

He narrated that the complainant handed the car to the accused to repair, but the accused drove the car to Zama Hotel, and sold its parts in pieces to different buyers.

The prosecutor further informed the court that during the investigation of the police, the accused admitted carrying out the act and that he sold the parts of the car.

He said the offence was a contravention of the provisions of Sections 296,271, 297 and 272 of the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
