2 govt workers in court over alleged failure to produce suspect

Two public servants on Friday appeared in an Abuja Court, for failing to present a suspect in court.

Abdul Hafsat and Yahaya Akeem were charged by the police with collaborative act and screening of an offender.

Mr Ade Adeyanju, who’s the Prosecution Counsel, earlier informed the court that the matter was brought to the awareness of the law enforcement agency at the Karu Police station by Hauwa Ijomu of Karu site, Abuja.

Adeyanju informed the court that sometime in October 2021, the complainant gave N4 million to Seidu Haruna who’s residing at Karu site Abuja, for a plot of land situated at plot 504 Karu village extension Abuja.

Adeyanju revealed that it was noticed that the land was a property of another person and Haruna agreed to return all the funds received from her.

He added that Haruna had so far returned N2.6 million remaining a balance of N1.4 million.

He said the offence was a violation of the provisions of sections 79 and 167 of the Penal Code.

He said that while the investigation of the police was ongoing, Haruna was set free on the administrative bail of the police to the defendants with an order that they should both present him whenever he is required by the police but they refused to comply with the aim of escaping criminal justice.

When the matter was read to them, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Mr Anas Mohammed, who presided over the matter granted the defendants the sum of N1.5 million bail each plus a surety in like sum who must reside within the juridiction of the court.

Mohammed directed that the surety must have attained the status of a GL12 officer in the civil service, and should present his first appointment and confirmation letters and last letter of promotion to the court.

He adjourned the matter until December for hearing.
