Court remands hip-hop star Terry Apala over naira abuse
A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has ordered the remand of hip-hop musician Terry Alexander Ejeh, known as Terry Apala, at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until May 5, 2025, when his bail application will be heard.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Ejeh before Justice Akintayo Aluko on a charge of naira abuse, stemming from an incident where he allegedly danced on currency during a social event at Madison Place, Oniru, Lagos Island.
EFCC counsel Sulaimon Sulaiman urged the court to read the charge formally so Ejeh could enter a plea. Ejeh pleaded not guilty, prompting the prosecutor to request a trial date and remand in custody.
Felix Nwabudu, Ejeh’s counsel, informed the court about a pending bail application and requested to present it, but Sulaiman opposed the motion, citing insufficient time to review the application.
Justice Aluko ruled in favor of the remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre and scheduled an accelerated hearing for May 5, 2025. The charge against Ejeh asserts that he tampered with naira currency issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria while dancing at the event, an action that is punishable under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007.
