As Nigeria celebrates its 63rd independence anniversary, it’s clear that our nation’s history is a tapestry woven with threads of tears, sorrows, bloodshed, and triumphs. It’s a story of a diverse and beautiful people united in their determination to live in harmony and achieve greatness, both as a collective and as individuals. The dream of excelling collectively and individually is at the heart of our nation.
Nigeria is a nation of remarkable beauty, boasting a rich tapestry of resources, including human, capital, and mineral wealth. We are blessed with ample potential to meet our people’s needs and aspire to greatness. Regrettably, we have grappled with corruption, and imaginative leadership has often been lacking. However, amidst the challenges, there are glimmers of hope.
Since 1999, Nigeria has experienced uninterrupted democracy, allowing our democratic values to mature. Gone are the days of coups and authoritarian rule. This has enabled our democracy to grow, and the collective psyche of our nation has become increasingly attuned to democratic values. In 1999, our GDP stood at approximately $59.37 billion, with a per capita income of $496. As of 2022, our GDP has grown to $477.39 billion, and per capita income has risen to $2,184—an undeniable testament to our economic progress.
Moreover, Nigeria’s civic space has become increasingly open and liberal, while the government has shown progress in accountability and imaginative governance.
The journey toward becoming the true giant of Africa is undeniably ongoing. It is a journey fraught with challenges, including insecurity, soaring inflation, endemic corruption, burdensome taxation, financial malfeasance, religious and tribal divisions. We must also focus on holistic developmental plans, comprehensive industrialization, providing free and inclusive basic education and primary healthcare for all. These steps will reduce the percentage of out-of-school children, lower maternal and child mortality rates, address the Almajiri kids’ predicament, and eliminate nefarious baby factories. Above all, we must strategically boost our GDP to match the aspirations and dreams of our teeming population, offering them the lives they deserve.
The path ahead remains challenging, but as patriots, we are steadfastly focused on the long-term vision for our beloved motherland, Nigeria. We are on the right trajectory, and with heightened determination and collaboration infused with a fervent sense of patriotism, we may reach our promised land sooner than anticipated.
On this special occasion, I extend my heartfelt wishes to our one and only motherland, Nigeria. I also wish all Nigerians a joyous Independence Day celebration. Let us move forward together, united in our dedication to God, country, and humanity.
“Posterity Shall Vindicate the Just.”
