Residents of Oko-Erin community, a suburb in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara, have appealed to the State Government to restore electricity supply to the community.

A resident of the community, Alhaji Oba Adebayo, made the plea while addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Ilorin.

Adebayo appealed to Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq to save the community from the darkness.

According to him, over 10,000 residents are pleading with the government to repair two transformers that were vandalized by unknown persons in the community.

The Informant247 recalled that Oko-Erin community was thrown into blackout since Jan. 24, following vandalism and theft of some component items in the two transformers serving the area.

Adebayo explained that the community had held a series of meetings and consultations on how to solve the problem which had crippled the socio-economic activities of the residents.

“In fact, some of the residents of the area who are tenants and needed electricity for their daily jobs have relocated from the community as a result of this problem,” he said.

Adebayo added that the community had sent a formal letter to the state governor and copied the member representing Ilorin Central Constituency at the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Abubakar Olawoyim-Magaji on the issue.

The community leader confirmed that some officials from the state Ministry of Energy had inspected the vandalized transformers, but that no action had been taken till now.

According to him, the residents contributed some money to repair the two transformers, but the amount was insufficient.

Similarly, the Chairman of Mustapha Sesan street community, Alhaji Abdullahi lbrahim, said the damage done to the two transformers has undermined the socio-economic life of the residents.

Blackout

The management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) says the states under its franchise are experiencing a prolonged power outage due to low weekly power allocation to its network by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Kikelomo Owoeye, IBEDC’s senior communication officer, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Osogbo, the Osun capital.

Ogun, Ibadan, Oyo, Osun, and Kwara are the areas affected by the power outage.

Residents have, in the past weeks, complained about “terrible” power supply, with some getting less than 10 hours of power supply in a week.
