In a move that can be connected with the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Roman Abramovich has relinquished his ownership of English Premier League giant, Chelsea football club.

The Billionaire has handed over the ownership of the team to the club’s charitable foundation after he was alleged of a link to President Vladimir Putin of Russia.

It’s instructive to know that the UK government, which has supported Ukraine since the war broke out has also targetted stiff sanctions against Russia in which some of its assets and that of her citizens could be affected.

In a statement published on the club’s website, the Chelsea owner said: “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.

“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

Under the auspices of Russian-born businessman, Chelsea has recorded a lot of achievements which has placed them amongst the rank of biggest clubs in the world.

Chelsea were two-timed champions and Europa league winner, five-times winner of premier league and FA Cup under the Russian ownership.

Other trophies won were English Super Cup on two occasions, one FIFA club world cup title and three-times English league cup winner.

Chelsea will look forward to increase their trophy cabinet when they face Liverpool in the final of Carabao Cup later on Sunday.
