Garba Shehu, a media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the claim that Nigerian Governors wield supreme powers has been proven wrong in the February 25 presidential election.

The presidential media aide made this revelation on Thursday March 16, 2023 while granting a television interview.

He said some state governors did not win their senatorial bids because the people decided their dates and the election was not able to be rigged.

The spokesperson of the president said the notion that governors need to proceed to the Senate as soon as they concluded their tenures as Governors has been cancelled.

He said: “These governors are not gods. Before now, there used to be the assumption that when you finish your tenure as a governor, you are entitled to proceed to the Senate.

“But we have seen several of them lose their senatorial bids because, ultimately, it is the will of the people that count.”

He said security operatives are ready to resist any attempt by any state Governor to rig the Saturday March 18 elections.

He said the people will decide whom they want as their representatives on March 18 despite the rumour of plans to manipulate the election in some states like Rivers, Edo, Enugu, Kano, and others.
