“You lifted Nigeria’s spirits” – Tinubu celebrates Super Falcons’ WAFCON triumph
President Bola Tinubu has vowed to give the Super Falcons a grand celebration upon their return from Morocco, where they secured the WAFCON title for an impressive 10th time on Saturday.
The Super Falcons staged a remarkable comeback at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, recovering from a two-goal deficit to beat the host nation Morocco 3-2 and claim the 2024 title.
The match saw Morocco take an early lead with goals from Ghizlane Chebbak in the 12th minute and Sanaâ Mssoudy in the 24th minute, but Nigeria responded with fervor in the second half.
Esther Okoronkwo sparked the resurgence by converting a penalty in the 64th minute and later assisted Folasade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st minute.
Jennifer Echegini capped off the thrilling comeback with a goal in the 88th minute, converting a well-placed free kick from Okoronkwo.
President Tinubu joined the celebrations during a video call with the team, expressing his pride: “As a team, we are very proud of you; the entire nation is proud of you.
You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy. You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team, including the ministers and officials.”
He acknowledged their historic achievement, stating, “To set the record of victories for the 10th time is not a small feat for the country and the continent as a whole. Safe journey back home, enjoy yourselves and avoid injuries.”
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed gratitude to the President for approving their bonuses and assured that they would present the trophy in Abuja. Tinubu responded warmly, “Good, I am looking forward to that.”
In an official statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the team’s determination: “The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.”
He added, “With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you.”
This victory marks the Falcons’ 10th triumph in WAFCON history, adding to their previous victories in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
