World Cup 2022: Another shocking result as Japan beat Germany
It was yet another shocking result on Wednesday as Japan came from behind on to beat Germany 2-1 in their World Cup opening game.
The four time World Cup champion on the heels of their relative dominance in the game had earlier secure the lead through Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty in the 33rd minutes.
While Kai Havertz would also have his own efforts ruled out by VAR in the stroke of half time, the Germans were still sure of a good day when they head in to the break with a goal advantage.
That the Germans still held fair share of the match, the Japanese eventually found their rythm and made count the few chances that came their way.
With fifteen minutes left on the time, Ritsu Doan slashed home a rebound and made a perfect finish off Manuel Neuer to change the tone of the encounter played at the Khalifa International Stadium.
Leaving the game so open with a leveler from Doan, Takuma Asano would be lucky in the 83rd minutes to find himself in a perfect position by connecting a long pass and slide home the winner to punish a wasteful German.
The result leaves much to be desired for in the second round matches when German face off with Spain.
Interestingly, the two goal scorers who had come off the bench for Japan are playing in the German Bundesliga. While Doan plays for Freiburg, Takuma Asano, who once missed the opportunity of playing for Arsenal due to work permit is currently plying his trade with VFL Bochum.
Japan will be hoping for another victory when they face Costa Rica in their second round match on November 27
