Why we shut down Mandate market in Ilorin – Kwara govt

The Kwara State Government has taken decisive action against the Mandate Market for violating environmental regulations, resulting in the market’s temporary closure.

Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman, the State Commissioner for Environment, issued the directive to close the market after repeated warnings to its leaders about complying with environmental laws.

Usman said, “Despite our numerous discussions with the market leaders and our ministry, urging them to adhere strictly to environmental laws, they remained non-compliant. We have consistently reminded them about the importance of maintaining a clean environment and removing refuse to prevent potential epidemic outbreaks in the state, but to our dismay, they failed to comply. Consequently, we took the necessary action today.”

The Commissioner said that the market’s temporary closure serves as a warning to other markets throughout the state to adhere to environmental regulations. Failure to comply may lead to similar measures taken by the ministry.

Usman reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving a clean and hygienic environment for the well-being of Kwara residents.

Following several hours of closure, the market was reopened with the intervention of key stakeholders in the state, who pledged their commitment to complying with environmental laws.
