‘We have agreed to work together’ – Wike, Fubara declare peace in Rivers, meet Tinubu
The political landscape in Rivers State is shifting towards stability as FCT Minister Nyesom Wike announced a collaborative agreement with suspended governor Siminalayi Fubara, stating, “We have agreed to work together.” This breakthrough followed a reconciliation meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, which also included President Bola Tinubu and suspended members of the Rivers Assembly.
Wike, who previously faced off with Fubara over the state’s political dynamics, noted that despite their disagreements, they have reached a consensus. “We are members of the same political family… just like humans, we all have disagreements, and then you also have the time to settle your disagreements,” he remarked, underscoring that their conflicts have now been resolved.
Wike expressed optimism about the future, adding, “For me, everything is over… we have all agreed on everything, so we thank Almighty God.”
The meeting comes after a tumultuous period in Rivers State, marked by President Tinubu’s decision to suspend Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and various members of the state assembly in March. This action was taken in response to ongoing political unrest, including pipeline explosions that heightened tensions.
Fubara echoed Wike’s sentiments on the significance of restoring peace, stating, “What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace… peace has returned in Rivers State. We will do everything within our power to ensure that we sustain it this time around.”
This newfound unity raises hopes for the resolution of the ongoing state of emergency declared in Rivers, ushering in a potential era of harmony in the state’s political affairs.
