WAFU-B Tournament: Nigeria Beat Côte d’Ivoire to secure U-17 AFCON Ticket
Golden Eaglets of Nigeria on Tuesday defeated Baby Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire 3-1 in the semi-final of the ongoing U17 WAFU B tourney in Ghana.
Eaglets, who had a perfect record in their group stage games, were thrown in to a stormy moment as the Ivorian team took the lead in to the second minute when Yan Diomandi pushed them in to the lead from the spot.
Coach Ugbade’s boys had to rally round to change the scoreline and it was Emmanuel Michael’s free kick prowess that came in to play when he slotted home an equalizer in the 31st minutes from an box-edge-placed free kick.
Michael then made it 2-1 on 43 minutes from another free-kick and it was the perfect show the team needed to prove their group stage 100% record.
Abdullahi Idris made it three for Nigeria with a beautiful header in the 61st minute. Meanwhile, the Baby Elephants were reduced to 10 men after Mustapha received a red card in the 65th minute.
The result means that the Coach Nduka Ugbade team has picked one of the two tickets for the CAF U-17 African Nations Cup even as they play the winner between Ghana and Burkina Faso in the final of the zonal qualifiers
