A police officer lost his life on Friday when some unknown gunmen who were suspected to be abductors barricaded the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The abductors eventually kidnapped Professor Adigun Agbaje, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The kidnappers, according to report, also abducted two students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Ogun State.
One of the students was identified as Miss Oluwatobi Orekoya.
It was gathered that the abductors have since communicated the victims’ families, requesting N50 million for the freedom of Professor Agbaje.
It was also gathered that the kidnappers have informed the parents of the two students to pay the sum of N10 million ransom.
It was gathered that Agbaje, was on sabbatical at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye (an Ogun State-owned tertiary institution) and going back to Ibadan around 6 pm when he was confronted by the suspected kidnappers.
It was also gathered that the incident occurred close to Sat Guru Maharaji Garden on the Ibadan road.
The Student Union Government President of MAPOLY, Damilola Ajani, while confirming the incident, persuaded members of the public for financial support and prayers towards the freedom of the kidnapped students of the school.
When contacted, the Oyo State police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, also while confirming the incident, said “an officer attached to the Oyo command paid the supreme price with another badly injured” in their attempt to engage the gunmen.
Osifeso also disclosed that four vehicles and expended ammunition shells that were abandoned at the affected scene have been recovered.
He said that the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Adebowale Williams, has directed police investigations into the unfortunate incident.
