US warns citizens in Nigeria to avoid military, govt facilities
The United States’ Mission in Nigeria has issued a warning advising all Americans to steer clear of military and government facilities in Abuja due to rising security concerns.
In a circular published on its website, the mission highlighted the importance of this warning in light of recent global developments.
The statement specified that U.S. Embassy staff and their families are prohibited from unofficial visits to any military site or government venue in Abuja.
“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,” the mission stated.
The statement further urged Americans in Nigeria to remain vigilant in public spaces, particularly in areas frequented by expatriates and government officials, adding that they should avoid large gatherings, limit unnecessary travel, and familiarize themselves with emergency exits in buildings.
The mission also encourages citizens to review their personal security plans.
Despite the warnings, the Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos remain operational.
In a related update, the U.S. State Department has issued a “worldwide caution” for Americans, citing increased security risks due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. “The conflict between Israel and Iran has resulted in disruptions to travel and periodic closure of airspace across the Middle East.
There is the potential for demonstrations against U.S. citizens and interests abroad,” the alert noted.
This advisory comes after recent U.S. military operations targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting threats from Tehran against U.S. bases in the region. Ali Akbar Velayati, an advisor to Iran’s supreme leader, stated, “Any country in the region or elsewhere that is used by American forces to strike Iran will be considered a legitimate target for our armed forces.”
In response to escalating tensions, the United States has also begun evacuation flights for American citizens and permanent residents from Israel and ordered the withdrawal of personnel from its diplomatic missions in Iraq and Lebanon.
