The judgment of the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Abeokuta, Ogun State, faced a delay on Wednesday as judicial workers closed the court’s gates in the state capital.

Leaders of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) locked the gates of the Magistrates’ Court at Isabo, Abeokuta, where the tribunal was scheduled to sit.

This action was in compliance with the two-day warning strike organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to protest the removal of fuel subsidy.

The NASS tribunal had set Wednesday as the date for delivering judgment in a petition against Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, also known as Yayi, who represents Ogun West.

The petition, marked EPT/OG/Sen/2023, was filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dada Ganiyu Adeleke.

Comrade Olanrewaju Ajiboye, the State Chairman of JUSUN, explained that the gate closure was in line with the national body’s directive for the two-day warning strike.

He acknowledged the time-sensitive nature of election tribunal proceedings but emphasized the importance of supporting the workers’ struggle, especially judicial workers.

Ajiboye stated, “The tribunal has the right to sit anywhere, but this is our own premises, we can always close it as directed by the national body of the union.”
