At least 10 people were killed and scores injured when a commercial bus and Volvo truck collided along a highway in central Nigeria, officials said on Monday.

The accident, involving a Volvo truck and a Toyota Hiace bus, occurred around 6:40 a.m. at Iyemoja Village along Olooru-Okoolowo express road, Moro Local Government Area of Kwara, as disclosed by the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Stephen Dawulung.

A total of 20 individuals, comprising 15 male adults, four female adults, and one male child, were involved in the crash. Tragically, 10 people—five male adults, four female adults, and one male child—lost their lives, while another 10 male adults sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“Preliminary investigation conducted by the operatives of FRSC revealed that the crash occurred due to wrongful overtaking by the driver of the Volvo truck, leading to a head-on collision with the bus,” Dawulung explained.

The bus, en route from Lagos to Sokoto with 17 passengers and goods, collided with the truck traveling from the north to Lagos with three passengers. The crash happened along Olooru-Okoolowo Road near a village known as Iyemoja.

Upon receiving the crash report, rescue operatives from Olooru Unit and the Help and Rescue Camp were promptly mobilized to the scene.

Injured victims were taken to State Hospital, Ilorin, while the deceased were transported to Teaching Hospital mortuary, Ilorin.

The FRSC extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured victims.

The Sector Commander emphasized the importance of avoiding wrongful overtaking and excessive speeding, attributing them as major causes of fatal crashes.

While urging drivers to prioritize safety, the Corps reiterated its commitment to ensuring the well-being of all road users.

Roads in Africa’s most populous country are among the deadliest in the world because of potholes, poorly maintained vehicles and dangerous driving.
