Trader got 12 months imprisonment for extorting 3 cell phones from sick man

A trader, Abdullahi Isa, 28, was on Friday sentenced to one year imprisonment of over extortion of three cell phones from a sick man whose ailment he had promised to cure.

Isa was sentenced by an Area Court sitting in Jos.

Malam Adam Sadiq and Hyacinth Dolnaan, the panel of two magistrates who made the pronouncement sentenced Isa to one year imprisonment.

The panel of judges however gave him a N30,000 fine.

The court also directed him to make a payment of N30,000 as compensation to the complainant or risk another six months imprisonment.

The court established that the judgment would serve as lesson to those who who would want to involve themselves in such criminal acts.

Insp Monday Dabit, who’s the Prosecution Counsel, earlier informed the court that the matter was on on August 6, brought to the awareness of the law enforcement agency at the Laranto Police station by the complainant, Malam Nazifi Yakub.

The prosecutor also narrated that the convict collaborated with ”Mallam now at large and dispossessed the complainant of three phones valued at N90,000 on the ground of healing him of his ailment.

The prosecutor added that the offence was a claim of the provisions of sections 59 and 277 of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
