Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday commiserated with the government of Libya over the flood that has ravaged the eastern part of the North African country.

The Informant247 gathered that significant parts of the city of Derna — home to approximately 100,000 people, were on Sunday swept away after Storm Daniel, a highly deadly Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone, collapsed two dams.

The dams were said to have submerged many buildings while drowning some residents.

The death toll has risen to over 5,000 since the tragedy occurred on Sunday. Thousands of people are still reportedly missing.

Morgues in the parts affected by floods are reportedly overwhelmed with corpses.

Tinubu in a statement by Anjuri Ngelale, his spokesperson, quoted Tinubu as commiserating with all the families who have lost loved ones in the “monumental disaster”.

The president said the loss of lives, homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure remains a shared grief that unites the people of both countries.

“Nigeria is ready to provide all necessary support to assist the Libyan people in overcoming this harrowing tragedy,” Tinubu said.
