Tinubu orders free healthcare, pension boost for low income retirees

In a significant move to enhance the welfare of retirees, Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has directed the expedited rollout of a free healthcare access initiative for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

According to a statement by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s directive was aimed at ensuring social protection and dignity in retirement.

“Access to healthcare is a right that must be guaranteed for our retirees,” Tinubu stated, underscoring the importance of providing support for those who have served the nation.

The President also ordered prompt implementation of overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee, aimed at securing a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners within the CPS.

After a comprehensive briefing from Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Tinubu instructed that the longstanding police pension issue be resolved urgently. “Members of the police force who serve and protect us deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind,” he asserted.

During the meeting, the DG discussed ongoing efforts to ensure the preservation of pension fund asset values amidst inflation and economic pressures, as well as plans to introduce foreign currency contributions for Nigerians in the diaspora.

President Tinubu expressed strong support for these reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and the protection of ordinary Nigerians. “We must work together to enhance the welfare of our retirees and expand the reach of the Pension Scheme,” he concluded.
