Tinubu meets Lula, seeks renewed diplomatic ties with Brazil

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Brasília, Brazil, on Monday, advocating for strengthened diplomatic and economic cooperation between Nigeria and the South American nation.

In a post on his official X handle, the President characterized his meeting with Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a pivotal moment to renew the “historic relationship” shared between both countries.

“I look forward to working with President Lula to deepen cooperation in agriculture, energy, trade, and culture, towards building a future of shared prosperity across the Atlantic,” Tinubu stated, emphasizing his commitment to enhancing collaboration in these vital sectors.

Welcomed by senior Brazilian government officials at the Brasília Air Base, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte and Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, the Nigerian leader received a warm reception upon his arrival from Los Angeles, United States.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, was also present to welcome President Tinubu. Following the reception, other ministers, alongside heads of key government agencies and private sector leaders, greeted him at his hotel in anticipation of upcoming bilateral discussions and the signing of memoranda of understanding.

An official welcoming ceremony with full military honors is currently taking place at the Planalto Palace, before a planned visit to the leader of Brazil’s National Congress.
