President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government on Sunday began payment of the withheld salaries of public university lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The Informant247 gathered that Comrade Nobert Oyibo Eze, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka branch Chairman of ASUU, made the confirmation to newsmen, saying, “Yes, they have started paying. Even though I’m yet to receive mine, some of our lecturers have received two months’ payments out of the outstanding eight months’ withheld salary,” Eze said.
Another lecturer also confirmed to newsmen that the federal government started paying on Sunday, adding that the two months’ salaries have been paid to him out of the eight months owed him.
It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu Tinubu had in October 2023 approved the release of four of the eight months’ ASUU withheld salaries of the workers, after the immediate past president Muhammadu Buhari invoked a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ against ASUU for embarking on a strike that lasted eight months in 2022.
