Three killed, 28 rescued as Katsina Police thwart two kidnapping attempts
The Katsina State Police Command has successfully prevented two separate kidnapping attempts in the Sabuwa Local Government Area, rescuing a total of 28 victims.
In a statement released on Wednesday, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, the command’s spokesperson, reported the developments.
The first incident took place on Tuesday at approximately 9:24 am when a good Samaritan alerted authorities about suspected bandits, armed with dangerous weapons, blocking the Sabuwa–Kaya Road at Inno Junction and kidnapping 14 individuals.
“Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Sabuwa swiftly mobilised operatives to the scene,” Sadiq said. “A gun duel ensued, but the hoodlums were forced to flee due to the superior firepower and tactical response of the police.”
All 14 victims were rescued unharmed, but the attack claimed the life of one Abba, a 27-year-old man from Funtua town in Funtua LGA.
In a related incident on Sunday, July 28, at about 11:27 pm, police received another distress call regarding armed bandits attacking Zagaizagi village and abducting several residents.
The DPO once again led a rapid response team that engaged the attackers in a fierce gunfight, successfully foiling the kidnap attempt and rescuing another 14 victims, while also recovering two rustled cows.
Regrettably, two individuals were killed during this attack as well. Sadiq emphasized that efforts to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects are ongoing.
Commending the officers for their bravery, Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Shehu, encouraged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and accurate information to facilitate swift responses to criminal activities.
“He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state,” the statement concluded.
Sabuwa remains one of Katsina State’s areas facing persistent threats from bandits, kidnappers, and cattle rustlers amidst a troubling surge in kidnapping for ransom.
