The court case between the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and Founder of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore turned bloody today as supporters of both faction clashed at the court premises today.
THE INFORMANT247 correspondent present on ground noted that the fracas started when some students, identified to be supporters of Sowore came in some few minutes after the case begin. The students who came into the court premises in three busses raised placards with different inscriptions like, ‘ Saraki is a looter’, an action which angered the supporters of the Senate President and make them retort to attacking those students. Earlier before the students arrival, the supporters of the Senate President, who referred to themselves as ‘state boys’ were on ground checking and monitoring the movement of people within the court premises. Among the ‘state boys’ who were on ground to harass the Observers were The Kwara state All Progressive Congress publicity secretary, Buhari Sulyman and the coordinator, APC team Kwara, Obalowu among others. They were reported to be seen identifying Sowore’s supporters, and some anti-sarakis who were at the court premises to observe the court proceedings and to show solidarity to Sowore. One of our reporters was also harassed at the court premises for covering the scene of how people were being beaten up. Many reporters were also prevented from reporting what transpired at the court premises.
It was later after the students were sent out of the court premises by the ‘state boys’ would the police showed up. Four of the students, who were already outside, were arrested by the police and immediately taken to the police headquarters. One of the Executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) kwara Axis, who was passing by the court premises at that moment, was also arrested in this process but was later released when he exonerate himself from the issue.
One of the observers who spoke with our correspondent after the court case on the condition of anonymity, express great displeasure over the way the case is being handled. He noted that when such a sensitive case is to hold, the security should be tight enough to prevent any breakdowns of law.
“As you know the case is a very sensitive one, the security operatives should be on ground and be very vigilant. You can observe how the Sowore’s supporters mobilised themselves from Lagos and the senate President’s supporters too were already on ground. There is no way there won’t be break down of law. Had it been the security was tight enough, this wouldn’t have happened. You can see the number of people injured and harassed in the process!”
He later appealed to both Senate President and Sowore to sheath their swords and allow justice to take it place.
However, inside the court, the defence counsel, Mr. Stanley ihmaruo raise a notice that the prosecuting counsel didn’t release the counter affidavit to the counsel team, thereby requesting for a damages fee of #200,000. The presiding judge, Justice Adeyinka sikiru Oyinloye, however didn’t grant the request and the case was later adjourned till 26th of October, 2017.
