Suspended Rivers Gov Fubara visits President Tinubu in Lagos
Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, paid a visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos on Tuesday, a meeting confirmed by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga. The announcement was made via a post on Onanuga’s X handle, which included photographs of the two leaders together.
“Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers, now on suspension from office, visited President Bola Tinubu in Lagos on Tuesday,” Onanuga wrote.
While specific details of their conversation remain unclear, this meeting occurs amid ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State.
The crisis erupted from a power struggle between Fubara and former governor Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the FCT.
This conflict has led to a division within the Rivers State House of Assembly, with lawmakers split between factions loyal to Wike and those supporting the suspended governor.
In a decisive move, President Tinubu suspended Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and several lawmakers from the House of Assembly for six months back in March.
He appointed retired naval chief Ibok-Ette Ibas as the state’s sole administrator, asserting that the suspension was necessary to ensure peace and security in the region. “No good and responsible President will stand by and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution,” Tinubu stated.
Despite the suspension, Fubara has continued to express interest in fostering peace in Rivers State and has indicated a willingness to reconcile with Wike, referring to him as his boss. The political landscape in Rivers State remains dynamic, and the implications of this meeting are being closely watched by the public and analysts alike.
