Supreme Court demands more judges, asks NBA to nominate
The appointment process of more judges to join the bench has commenced by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
It was learned that 21 slots are available, but eight slots are needed to be occupied. The number reduced after the retirement of some justices.
The slots are North-Central (2), North-West (1), South-East (2), South-South (1), South-West (2); no vacancy for the North-East.
Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), urged blocs in the legal profession and the judiciary to nominate candidates.
They include the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), heads of courts as well as judges of the nation’s highest court.
Meanwhile, the NBA President Yakubu Maikyau has sent a memo to lawyers after receiving the notice from Ariwoola on Friday, June 16, saying the CJN asked him “to nominate suitably qualified candidates to be recommended for appointment to the Supreme Court of Nigeria”.
However, the interested lawyers from the regions are advised to submit their expression of interest to the NBA secretariat in Abuja on or before 21 June.
